Last Island, located Southwest of New Orleans, was the location of an exclusive resort for tich, southern gentry during a time of great prosperity in the South. The tragedy that befell Last Isaldn has becom legend. In the fall of 1856, instead of making preparations, island residents decided to have a "hurricane party" at the resort hotel, the tallest building on the island. The day after the hurricane, not a building was left standing. Few survivors were found, some clinging to life on fine amoires floating in the gulf.
